2nd Grade Programs
Build an Ecosystem (Science 2.1, 5, and English 2.6) - Using some empty, clear 2 liter bottles, the class will build an ecosystem with pond life at the bottom and land life on top. The two exchange water and oxygen so the class can watch bugs crawling on the second floor and fish swimming in the basement. The ecosystem can then be displayed in the classroom near a window for students to observe over time.

We All Need Trees (Science 2.1, 5, 7, 8 and VA 2.4) - This is an interactive story about all the amazing products that trees provide for us. Products that come from trees will be displayed Depending on weather/time/teacher preference, students will walk in the school yard and observe different colors, shapes, textures, and sizes of leaves and collect sample to do art work or students can complete a leaf rubbing craft using plastic plates.

Squirmin' Herman and Life Underground (Science 2.1, 4, 5, and 8) - Squirmin' Herman will read us a story about worms and all the ways worms help us. They will then get up close and personal as they make observations about real red wigglers. We will make a classroom worm composter that students can observe over a period of time and record the changes.

From Seed to Plant (Science 2.1, 4) - Students will learn what plants need to grow and survive. They will hear a story and (optional) then play a quick game where they pretend to be plants. Students can then make their very own soil baby or a mini greenhouse. Models of a plant life cycle will be available for students to see and sort.

Pollinators - Our Local Heroes! (Science 2.1, 4, 5, 8, English 2.6, and VA 2.4) - Students will learn what pollination is and the role that bees, bats, beetles, butterflies, hummingbirds, flies, and moths play in producing food. Four crafts available to choose from: pollinator mask, pollinator finger puppet, life cycle of a bee, life cycle of a butterfly.
